Catherine van der Meer
|
|
Catherine van der Meer is a professional artist
who lives and works in Melbourne. Her paintings
and large charcoal drawings express in their
dark intricacy a quiet, mysterious and
contemplative quality. |
|
|
|
Her recent work has been based around both the
ideas of the city as scar tissue of history, and
the perception of architectural systems and
structures as forming a carapace within which
society exists and by which it attempts to
reflect itself. This impermanent and to some
extent fluid shell, is inevitably imbued with
symbolic value and exists in a state of flux,
simultaneously developing and deteriorating in a
random way. |
|
|
|
A
current thematic preoccupation within this idea
is with the exploration of various aspects of
the mythical Tower of Babel, seen as a metaphor
for the human condition. |
|
|
|
Van der Meer simultaneously interweaves several
series of images around her central theme.
Ladders, steps, stairs and various forms
mirroring such images, are one of the recurring
symbols in the drawings, and may allude to the
progression of life itself, the uncertain
progress of humanity and the inexorable progress
of technology. |
|
|
|
Van der Meer has received a number of
commissions for specific projects over recent
times and her work is held in corporate and in
private collections in Australia and the UK. |
